01. Carbon black reactor

The carbon black reactor is divided into five major linings: combustion chamber, throat, reaction section, quenching section, and retention section.

The fuel of the carbon black reactor is mostly heavy oil, and the raw materials are hydrocarbons. During the production of carbon black, the atmosphere of fuel combustion in the reactor is complex, the raw materials are thermally decomposed, the spray of cooling carbon black, and the objects produced by the thermal decomposition of fuel and raw materials will produce various physical reactions with the refractory bricks used for the lining.

02. Requirements for the selection of refractory bricks

The operating temperature of the reactor lining can reach 1600~1700℃, and the speed of the hot air flow in the furnace is particularly fast. The temperature at the end of the throat is above 1700℃, and there is also air flow scouring. Some high-temperature areas are even as high as 1900℃. Sometimes the furnace is shut down and different products are replaced due to operational reasons, and the water vapor in the air flow will enter the furnace lining and blow the oil pipeline.

The complex atmosphere of the reactor lining will cause the refractory bricks of the lining to be attacked by thermal stress and cause peeling. In addition, the ash produced after the pyrolysis of fuel and raw materials also has great erosion and damage to refractory bricks.

Therefore, the refractory bricks used for the lining of the carbon black reactor must have high refractoriness, good thermal shock stability, high volume density, and low porosity. They must also be resistant to high temperature corrosion and strong erosion by airflow.

03. Commonly used refractory bricks

The refractory bricks commonly used in the lining of the carbon black reactor are alumina silica bricks, corundum bricks, chrome corundum bricks and zirconium refractory bricks. Alumina silica bricks include high alumina, mullite, corundum bricks, etc.; chrome corundum refractory bricks are composite refractory bricks containing different chromium components and sintered at high temperature, and zirconium refractory bricks include chrome corundum products and bricks containing zirconium oxide.

04. Different types of refractory bricks at different temperatures

There are also carbon black reactor linings that use silicon carbide composite bricks for masonry, and low temperature areas will use high alumina bricks or clay bricks for masonry. In the temperature range of 1550~1750℃, corundum mullite is combined with refractory bricks. In the cooling zone where the temperature does not exceed 1300℃, high-alumina bricks with an aluminum content of 65-70% are used for masonry. In the area where the temperature is between 1750~1925℃, chrome corundum refractory bricks with thermal shock resistance are used for masonry.
