New materials for tundish ladle lining

Sep 24,2024

New materials for tundish linings have been significantly developed and applied in recent years. These materials are designed to improve the thermal insulation performance, fire resistance and service life of the tundish. The following are some common new materials and their application characteristics:

1. Nanoporous thermal insulation materials

Material characteristics: Nano-microporous thermal insulation materials, such as nano-microporous insulation panels (referred to as "nano-boards"), are a new type of thermal insulation material developed based on the nano-micropore principle. It uses ultra-fine SiO2 and heat radiation absorbing materials and other porous plates pressed by a special process, and has ultra-low thermal conductivity (lower than still air).

Application effect: In actual applications in Baosteel and other enterprises, nano-microporous heat insulation panels have significantly reduced the heat loss of the tundish and improved the thermal insulation effect of molten steel. Its excellent thermal insulation properties help reduce the temperature drop of molten steel, improve steel quality, and extend the service life of the tundish.

2. Lightweight insulation bricks

Material type: Lightweight insulation bricks, such as floating bead bricks, are widely used in tundish linings due to their low density and good thermal insulation properties.

Application characteristics: Floating bead bricks have a small thermal expansion coefficient and high thermal shock resistance at high temperatures, which can effectively protect core insulation materials such as nano-microporous insulation boards, while reducing the conduction of heat to the tundish shell.

3. Low cement semi-light mullite castable

Material characteristics: Low cement semi-light mullite castable is a high-performance refractory castable with low cement content and high mullite content. This material has good volume stability and thermal shock resistance at high temperatures.

Application effect: Through integral pouring, low-cement semi-light mullite castables can form a strong and durable permanent lining of the tundish, effectively resisting the erosion of molten steel and slag, and extending the service life of the tundish.

4. Insulation panels

Material type: Insulation panels, such as silica insulation panels, magnesia insulation panels and forsterite insulation panels, have low thermal conductivity and good thermal insulation properties.

Application features: The insulation board can be in direct contact with the molten steel, effectively reducing the temperature drop of the molten steel. At the same time, the insulation board also has good resistance to slag erosion and penetration, which can extend the service life of the tundish working lining.

5. Fire-resistant coatings and fire-resistant spray coatings

Material characteristics: With the development of multi-furnace continuous pouring technology and rapid nozzle replacement technology, refractory coatings and refractory spray coatings have gradually replaced traditional refractory bricks and insulation boards due to their convenient construction and rapid hardening.

Application effect: These new refractory materials can significantly improve the utilization rate and overall performance of the tundish, and reduce the consumption of refractory materials and production costs.

There are a variety of new materials for tundish linings, each with its own unique characteristics and application advantages. In practical applications, appropriate material combinations and configuration plans should be selected based on specific process conditions and production requirements to achieve the safe, stable, efficient, and long-lasting operation goals of the tundish.
